Kim K. has never shied away from sharing all her medi-beauty adventures (vampire or no) — but on her Instagram today, she’s flaunting a cosmetic change that is likely 100% all-natural.
Posting this pic in glossy pink, she writes: “My pregnancy lips are outta control #IGuessNotABadProblemToHave.” Which leaves us wondering — are plumped up “pregnancy lips” an actual thing? If they are indeed a natural phenomenon, we could definitely save RealSelf readers some worry about the safety of fillers during pregnancy. We put our favorite Ob-Gyn, Dr. Tara Solomon, on speed dial to find out…
And, according to the good doctor — Kim likely is experiencing a normal reaction to having a baby called “pregnancy induced edema.”
“Basically, it’s what happens when the body has an extra 1.2 liters of blood during pregnancy — and all that excess fluid ends up pooling in the arms and into the tissue — and that’s what makes everything (including your lips, under eyes and nose) look larger than life,” says Dr. Solomon.
Additionally, although this phenomenon happens to most mommies-to-be — some women (like Kim) may experience it a bit more dramatically. Says Dr. Solomon, “Kim has admitted that her pregnancy is much more difficult than Kourtney’s — and Kourtney did not appear to have [this degree of swelling]. Kris Jenner also had [easy] pregnancies. There are different pregnancy symptoms for every woman.”
So — does this “lip plumping” effect stick around for the long haul? Not a chance, says Dr. Solomon. “When you deliver the baby — a woman can lose 10-20 pounds immediately after the delivery because of all the fluid loss.” — effectively losing that lusciously pouty pucker.
